Full Course Description
This is a fantastic, picturesque course traversing iconic Hawke's Bay landmarks. It meanders up and down the three main peaks of Mt Erin, Mt Kahuranaki and historic Te Mata Peak. Much of it on private land, this course provides a unique Hawke's Bay experience meeting the needs of beginners and experienced participants alike.
For those of you participating for the first time it is a real challenge. The hills are hard and steep both up and down. There are several fences to climb and gates to be negotiated depending on stock movements. Be prepared to carry your bike on certain sections. There are two river crossings that will require arm linking or bike shouldering depending on how you are travelling. The weather on the tops can be adverse even on nice days, with exposed, windy ridges and you need to be adequately prepared for snow, rain or blistering sunshine.
Leg 1: 10km* The event starts at the Havelock North Domain and heads via the historic Kopanga Station to the summit of Mt Erin (489 metres). This is the transition point for the six person teams.
Leg 2: 4km* From the summit of Mt Erin the course steeply descends to the next transition area at Rochford Road after crossing the Tukituki River. This is the transition for the three and six person teams.
Leg 3: 11km* From the Rochford Road transition the course follows a section of tar sealed road to the base of Mt Kahuranaki. Here it ascends to the summit (646 metres). The course then back -tracks down the access road to the end of the leg at the top of a ridge. this is the transition for the six person teams.
Leg 4: 10km* From the ridge top the course undulates its way along farm tracks and through forest to cross the sealed road and onto the river bank of Euchre Flats. Cross the river, head left into Matangi Rd and down untill you see the stock yards. This is the transition for the three and six person teams.
Leg 5: 7km* The event trail then climbs via the historic mail road through Tauroa Station. The trail then leads competitors to the summit of of Te Mata Peak via the Goat Track** (399 metres). this is the transition for the six person teams.Click here to see a 360 degree view
from the top of Te Mata Peak.
Leg 6: 6km* The route back down to the finish will take the runners and walkers through both native bush and farmland via the Peak Trail and Chambers Walk. After a small section of road, runners and walkers will then travel through the beautiful Tainui Reserve and then head home down Joll Road through the very heart of the Village. Mountain bikers after a small road section will enjoy the views from Windy Ridge** and a fun downhill section before heading back to the Havelock North Domain via Chambers Walk and a fast road section.
Drink Stops: You will need to carry enough water with you to complete the race.
